Vintage Kansas City Star Flower Garden Quilt

This is a Cutter/Stacker Quilt

A beautiful survivor from the late Depression era, this vintage cutter quilt features the Kansas City Star Flower Garden Block pattern, first published by the Kansas City Star in 1937 as a variation of the earlier pattern known as The Diamond. Unlike the traditional Grandmother's Flower Garden, this design extends the hexagonal petals into elongated points, creating striking interlocking floral and hexagonal star motifs throughout the quilt.

This quilt is entirely hand pieced and hand quilted, with an original hand-stitched knife-edge binding. The substantial cotton batting gives it a wonderfully heavy feel, making it a fine example of the durable utility quilts made during the late 1930s and early 1940s. The fabrics are a delightful blend of Depression-era prints, striped shirtings, solids, and what appear to be several feedsack fabrics, all in a cheerful palette of pinks, greens, aqua, butter yellow, orange, and navy.

This quilt is being offered in cutter condition. It has fabric loss, holes, border tears and fraying, scattered staining, and overall wear consistent with decades of use. While the damage is significant, many of the beautiful Flower Garden Block stars remain intact, offering an abundance of usable sections for repurposing or textile art.

When this quilt arrived at Janj Threads, it was exceptionally dirty from years of storage and use. It was carefully soaked over a period of four days, with the water changed several times until it ran completely clear. Although the quilt is now clean, many of the discolorations remain. In my opinion, some of what appears to be staining is actually the result of unstable brown dyes that have migrated into surrounding fabrics over time rather than surface soil.

Whether you're creating pillows, handbags, jackets, wall art, or preserving portions of this historic textile, this quilt offers wonderful fabrics, authentic handwork, and a fascinating pattern with documented historical roots.

This quilt has been laundered by Janj Threads.

As with all vintage quilts, the exact year of creation cannot be confirmed, but the fabrics and workmanship strongly support this period.
