Vintage Sunbonnet Sue Quilt 

This sweet Vintage Sunbonnet Sue Quilt measures 60" x 78" and features twelve charming Sunbonnet Sue appliqué figures dressed in a delightful variety of fabrics, including florals, plaids, ginghams, and novelty prints. Each Sue is outlined with bold black blanket stitching, giving the quilt a wonderful folk-art character and allowing the colorful dresses to stand out against the cheerful pink-and-white setting. The quilt is hand quilted throughout with large floral motifs that create beautiful texture across both the front and back. The batting is thin with a touch of loft, giving the quilt a soft, lightweight feel.

The front of the quilt is clean, and the Sunbonnet Sue appliqués remain in excellent condition. At some point in the quilt's life, the binding appears to have been replaced. The black machine-applied binding is not neatly attached throughout, and in several areas the backing and batting were not fully caught in the binding, leaving portions of both exposed along the edges. Despite these issues, the quilt displays beautifully and remains a charming example of a well-loved mid-century Sunbonnet Sue quilt.

This quilt has not been laundered by Janj Threads. 

  • Condition: Good 
  • Circa: 1945 - early 1960  Sunbonnet Sue quilts enjoyed tremendous popularity during the mid-20th century, particularly as gifts for children and young girls. The cheerful appliqué figures, variety of scrap fabrics, hand quilting, and feedsack-era prints found in several of the dresses are all consistent with quilts made during the 1940s and 1950s. While an exact date is impossible to determine, this quilt is believed to have been made circa 1945–1960.
