Vintage Sun Bonnet Sue Quilt

THIS IS A CUTTER/STACKER QUILT

There is something especially heartwarming about a well-loved Sunbonnet Sue quilt. This vintage example features charming hand-appliquéd Sunbonnet Sue blocks, each dressed in a delightful assortment of authentic Depression-era cotton prints, including several classic feedsack fabrics, and framed by cheerful blue sashing. Measuring approximately 72" x 76", the quilt is hand quilted throughout and finished with an applied binding that has been hand stitched. It contains a thin cotton batting that has shifted over time, adding to the quilt's well-used character and history.

This quilt is being offered as a cutter quilt due to its very poor condition. Many of the Sunbonnet Sue blocks exhibit extensive wear, including holes, fabric loss, missing appliqué pieces, fraying, and thinning fabrics from decades of use. Approximately 12 of the Sunbonnet Sue figures remain useable but with fabric loss or deterioration, making this an exceptional source of authentic 1930s–1940s fabrics, including desirable feedsack prints, for quilt restoration, slow stitching, textile art, pillows, totes, journals, ornaments, and other creative heirloom projects. While it has reached the end of its life as a functional quilt, it still offers countless opportunities for preserving pieces of quilting history—one little Sunbonnet Sue at a time.

This quilt has not been laundered by Janj Threads.

  • Circa: 1930s - 1940s Based on the fabrics, appliqué style, construction techniques, and overall design, this quilt was most likely created during the late 1930s to early 1940s. As with all vintage textiles, this represents our best estimate rather than a documented year of manufacture.

  • Standout: Some Sues still intact!

Please Read Before Purchasing 🤍

Due to the vintage and handmade nature of the items sold at Janj Threads, all sales are final.

We do our very best to carefully inspect each piece and note any flaws, fabric wear, fading, dye bleeding, spots, stains, repairs, or damage within the listing description and photos. However, because these quilts and textiles are often decades old, we may occasionally miss something.

Please take time to carefully review all photos provided for each item before completing your purchase.

Photos containing a green tag are intended to highlight an imperfection or area of concern. The green tag measures approximately 2” x 2” and is included to help give perspective on the size of the flaw. Cutter/Stacker quilts do not have green tags. Please review the photos carefully.

Vintage quilts and textiles carry the beauty of age, history, and use, and minor imperfections are often part of their story and charm.
