Vintage Quilt Sunbonnet Sue

This striking Red and Pink Sunbonnet Sue quilt features 12 oversized bonneted figures arranged in a classic three-by-four setting. Each Sue wears a wonderfully different combination of florals, calicoes, novelty prints, and colorful solids, framed by dusty pink and deep red sashing. The figures are worked in raw-edge appliqué and finished with machine zigzag stitching, giving the quilt a charming homespun character. Hand-quilted curves surround each figure, while geometric quilting adds texture throughout the sashing.

Measuring approximately 82" x 94", this generously sized quilt has a hand-stitched applied binding and hand quilting averaging approximately seven stitches per inch. The batting is thin yet lofty, giving the quilt pleasing dimension without excessive weight. There are some popped quilting stitches consistent with age and use. The familiar Sunbonnet Sue motif dates back to the early 20th century, but the bold red-and-pink palette, fabric selection, and zigzag appliqué technique suggest this is a later quilt-revival interpretation.

This quilt has not been laundered by Janj Threads. Any cleaning decisions have been let to the next caretaker to preserve the quilt according to their preferences. Please use care when washing this quilt. Color fastness testing is highly recommended.

  • Circa: 1970s–early 1980s, based on the machine zigzag appliqué, fabric prints, color palette, and revival-style interpretation of the traditional bonnet-girl motif.
