Vintage Quilt Jacob's Ladder

THIS IS A CUTTER/STACKER QUILT

This vintage Jacob’s Ladder quilt is a wonderfully scrappy example of a traditional American quilt pattern. The block is identified as Jacob’s Ladder #1695a in Barbara Brackman’s Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns. Pieced in assorted plaids, stripes, checks, florals, polka dots and other period cottons, the blocks are alternated with warm, peach setting squares. The combination gives the quilt a soft, homespun appearance and allows each individual fabric to shine.

Jacob’s Ladder is a longstanding pattern whose diagonal piecing creates the appearance of a continuous path or ladder across each block. Here, the varied fabrics give every block its own personality. Many appear to have been repurposed from clothing or other household textiles, reflecting the practical, make-do spirit of earlier quiltmakers.

Measuring approximately 73" x 78", the quilt is completely hand quilted. The pink setting squares feature charming hand-quilted floral motifs, while the pieced blocks are quilted to emphasize their geometric construction. The thin batting gives the quilt a lightweight feel and a lovely aged texture. The applied binding is finished by hand but has fraying throughout.

This quilt has been well used and loved. There is extensive seam separation and fabric loss throughout the quilt, along with considerable wear to the binding. Because of its condition, it is best suited for gentle display, textile study or creative repurposing. It would be especially beautiful displayed over a railing, folded in a quilt cupboard or used to create thoughtfully preserved upcycled pieces.

This quilt has not been laundered by Janj Threads. Any cleaning decisions have been left to the next caretaker to preserve the quilt according to their preferences.

Please take time to carefully review all photos provided for each item before completing your purchase.

Photos containing a green tag are intended to highlight an imperfection or area of concern. The green tag measures approximately 2” x 2” and is included to help give perspective on the size of the flaw. Cutter/Stacker quilts do not have green tags. Please review the photos carefully.
