Vintage Quilt Improved Nine Patch

This beautiful Improved Nine Patch quilt measures 76" x 82" and is a wonderful example of a classic Depression-era pattern brought to life through an exceptional assortment of period fabrics. The design is documented as #306 Improved Nine Patch in Barbara Brackman’s Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns and appeared in the Rural New Yorker in February 1930. Over the years, variations of the design have also been published under names including Circle Upon Circle, Four Leaf Clover, Nine Patch Variation, and Glorified Nine Patch. The maker used the blue-and-white striped fabric throughout the curved sections to create a strong secondary circular design, while cheerful yellows, pinks, blues, greens, purples, plaids, ginghams, florals, and novelty prints give every block its own personality. The fabric assortment is consistent with 1930s into 1940s dressmaking and household sewing fabrics, making the quilt a delightful snapshot of textiles from the era.

The quilt is entirely hand pieced and hand quilted, with quilting averaging approximately 5–6 stitches per inch (SPI). The individual quilting motifs add wonderful texture to the Nine Patch blocks, while quilting along the curved striped sections beautifully emphasizes the interlocking design. A medium-weight batting gives the quilt comfortable substance without excessive bulk. The applied binding is hand stitched, completing its traditional construction. Most impressive is the condition: this quilt is in excellent vintage condition with no noted fabric loss, holes, or spots. With its graphic circular movement, terrific collection of period fabrics, and extensive handwork, this is an especially appealing example of the Improved Nine Patch pattern and a beautiful piece of American quilt making history.
