Vintage Quilt Friendship Dahlia Variation Quilt

THIS IS A CUTTER/STACKER QUILT

Dusty pink sashing, soft yellow flower centers, and a charming assortment of feedsack and other vintage cotton fabrics give this Friendship Dahlia Variation quilt a wonderfully nostalgic look. The pattern identification is based on Friendship Dahlia, #37.915 in Barbara Brackman’s Encyclopedia of Appliqué. This variation uses the same flower construction but omits the stems.

The cheerful florals, checks, dots, and geometric prints support an estimated date of circa 1930s–1940s. Each Dahlia is hand appliquéd, and the quilt is hand quilted, with lovely decorative stitching throughout the pink sashing. The batting is thin, and alternating pink and cream prairie points form the binding.

It measures 67" × 82" without the prairie points and approximately 73" × 90" including the points.

This is a cutter quilt with significant damage to many of the Dahlia blocks, including tears, fraying, and missing fabric. There are 13 good Dahlias, plus a few others that are usable but need some TLC. The prairie-point binding has several areas of wear and is torn and frayed at the head of the quilt. Additional holes, fading, and spotting are shown in the photos.

With its sweet vintage fabrics and beautiful handwork, the remaining flowers offer plenty of possibilities for pillows, pouches, framed blocks, and other projects—giving this quilt a second life, one stitch at a time.

This quilt has not been laundered by Janj Threads. Any cleaning decisions have been left to the next caretaker to preserve the quilt according to their preferences.
