Vintage Quilt Dutch Boy Dated

Delightfully whimsical and rich in character, this charming vintage quilt features 12 hand-appliquéd Dutch Boys alternating with 12 beautifully hand-embroidered sailing ships, creating a timeless design that captures the spirit of childhood in the late 1930s. An embroidered inscription on the quilt reading "The Dutch Boy" along with the stitched initials "R.C.K. 1938" provides wonderful documentation, making this an especially appealing example of a dated quilt. Based on both the documented embroidery and the fabrics and construction techniques, this quilt dates to 1938, placing it squarely in the late Depression era.

Measuring 78" x 92", the quilt is entirely hand quilted with simple diagonal quilting that beautifully complements the appliqué motifs. The applied binding is hand stitched, and the sailing ships are meticulously hand embroidered, showcasing the maker's skill and attention to detail. This quilt was made without batting, a characteristic sometimes found in warm-weather quilts or summer coverlets, giving it a soft, lightweight drape.

The quilt remains in good vintage condition with a few stains, as shown in the photographs, but no significant structural concerns. The Dutch Boy appliqués retain their wonderful personality, and the embroidered ships remain crisp and charming. Whether displayed in a nursery, children's room, nautical-themed space, or added to a collection of vintage and juvenile quilts, this documented 1938 quilt is a delightful piece of American quilt history with exceptional visual appeal and provenance.
