Vintage Quilt Dresden Plate

This vintage Dresden Plate quilt is a cheerful example of Depression-era quiltmaking, featuring 30 colorful plates arranged in five rows across and six rows down. Each plate is made from a wonderful assortment of period cottons, including florals, plaids, polka dots, paisleys and dress prints, with likely feedsack fabrics mixed throughout. The plates are appliquéd to off-white blocks and framed with wide pink sashing. Hand-stitched quilting at approximately 7 stitches per inch includes diamond quilting within the blocks and a lovely interlocking-circle design across the pink sashing. Based on the fabrics and the popularity of the pattern, this quilt likely dates to the 1930s–early 1940s.

Measuring approximately 70" x 84", the quilt has thin batting and a hand-stitched knife-edge finish. It likely has never been washed, as the original quilter’s guide markings remain visible—an especially charming glimpse into how the quilting design was laid out. This quilt is in excellent condition, with no fabric loss or deterioration. There is only slight fading to portions of the pink border and sashing. A beautifully preserved vintage quilt filled with color, character and remarkable handwork.

This quilt has not been laundered by Janj Threads. Any cleaning decisions have been left to the next caretaker to preserve the quilt according to their preferences. The quilt appears to never have been washed and we recommend color testing before laundering.
