Vintage Quilt Calico Rose Kit Quilt

Soft, elegant, and beautifully handcrafted, this Calico Rose appliqué quilt is a wonderful example of the revival of traditional quilting that swept through America during the 1970s. Originally offered as a quilt kit by the Progress Company, the Calico Rose design appeared in Herrschners catalogs from 1972 through 1977, and later in the 1980 Lee Wards catalog, where the complete kit sold for $11.49. While kit quilts are often associated with this era, each one reflects the individual artistry of its maker, as every appliqué stitch, quilting stitch, and embroidered detail was completed entirely by hand.

Measuring 77" x 91", this quilt features graceful floral appliqué arranged in a striking center wreath with coordinating corner bouquets, all framed by a beautifully scalloped border. The quilt is hand appliquéd, hand embroidered, and hand quilted, showcasing careful workmanship throughout. One of its most impressive attributes is the extraordinary hand quilting, which incorporates finely stitched crosshatching surrounding the center wreath, elegant cable motifs, echo quilting, parallel line quilting, and delicate floral quilting in the open spaces. Together, these quilting patterns create remarkable texture and dimension, drawing the eye across the quilt while highlighting the maker's exceptional skill and countless hours of craftsmanship. It is the kind of quilting that invites you to pause and admire the artistry long after you've taken in the beautiful appliqué.

An applied binding finishes the edge and has been hand stitched to the reverse. The binding appears to have originally been a deeper green but has naturally mellowed over the decades to a soft tan with just a hint of its original green, giving the quilt a gentle patina that complements its vintage charm.  The quilt remains in excellent condition, with no notable wear or staining observed. The crisp white background beautifully showcases the cheerful pink blossoms and sunny floral prints, making this quilt as eye-catching today as when it was first completed. Some of the quilter's guide lines remain, further indicating that this quilt has likely never been laundered.

This quilt has not been laundered by Janj Threads.

  • Condition: Excellent
  • Circa: 1972–1980. While the pattern was sold commercially during the 1970s and remained available into 1980, the exact year this quilt was completed is unknown. Based on the documented availability of the Progress Company kit through Herrschners and Lee Wards, it was most likely made during that period. Today, it stands as a beautiful representation of the quilting revival of the 1970s, combining the convenience of a commercial kit with the unmistakable beauty of hand appliqué, hand embroidery, and exquisite hand quilting.
  • Size: 77"x91"
  • Batting: light weight
  • Standout: Hand stitched quilting is a work of art.
  • Shipping: (within the continental U.S.) and shipping insurance is included in the price of the item.
