Vintage Quilt Butterfly Applique

THIS IS A CUTTER\STACKER QUILT

With its cheerful vintage quilt offers a parade of butterflies and remarkable collection of vintage fabrics, this Butterfly Appliqué Quilt remains a beautiful example of mid-century American quilt making. Measuring 62" x 82", the quilt features 63 individually appliquéd butterflies, each showcasing a different fabric, making it as much a fabric archive as it is a quilt. Many of the butterflies are created from charming 1930s and 1940s prints, including feedsack fabrics, florals, shirtings, and dress prints, while a handful of fabrics appear to date to the 1910s and 1920s, reflecting the long-held quilting tradition of saving treasured scraps for future projects.

Although this quilt is rich in history and visual appeal, it is being offered as a cutter quilt due to condition. The head of the quilt has significant wear, including fabric loss, tears, and deterioration to the hand-stitched applied binding. The backing also shows areas of staining. Of the 63 butterflies, 61 remain fully intact, while 2 have damage, and a few butterflies exhibit some loss to the black embroidered blanket stitch outlining the appliqué. Despite these condition issues, the vast majority of the butterflies remain beautifully preserved, offering an abundance of usable appliqué motifs for creative repurposing or restoration projects.

The quilt is hand quilted with a lightweight batting and finished with an applied binding that is hand stitched. Whether you envision incorporating these charming butterflies into pillows, framed textile art, heirloom bears, jackets, or other one-of-a-kind creations, this quilt offers an exceptional collection of vintage fabrics and handcrafted details ready to begin their next chapter.
