Vintage Quilt Butterfly Applique

Delightfully cheerful and full of mid-century charm, this Butterfly Appliqué quilt showcases colorful hand-appliquéd butterflies that seem to flutter across a soft butter-yellow background. Each butterfly is carefully stitched by hand using decorative blanket stitching, while delicate embroidered antennae and beautifully executed hand quilting add texture and depth throughout the quilt. The quilting features an elegant floral motif that complements the appliqué without overwhelming it, creating a wonderfully balanced design. Finished with an applied binding that has been hand stitched, the quilt measures approximately 58" x 80" and contains a medium-weight batting with a soft, lofty feel, making it a beautiful display piece or a cozy quilt for everyday enjoyment.

This quilt is in excellent condition, with only a few small spots noted. An especially charming detail is that the original quilter's guidelines are still faintly visible in a few areas, suggesting the quilt has likely never been laundered since it was completed. It remains a wonderful example of skilled handwork and thoughtful craftsmanship, preserving both the maker's artistry and the character that collectors appreciate in vintage quilts.

This quilt has not been laundered by Janj Threads. Any cleaning decisions have been left to the next caretaker to preserve the quilt according to their preferences.

  • Circa: 1945–1955. The combination of whimsical butterfly appliqué, post-war color palette, dimensional hand appliqué, and the style of the printed cotton fabrics are all characteristic of American quilts made during the late 1940s to early 1950s.
