Vintage Quilt Broken Star

This striking Broken Star quilt is a true showcase of precision piecing and timeless design. Identified as Broken Star Whole Top Design 4007.5 in Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilts, the pattern was published in Capper's Weekly on June 15, 1925. It has also appeared under the names Blazing Star (Rural New Yorker, 1935), Diadem Star (Rural New Yorker, 1931), and Star of Bethlehem (Stafford & Bishop). Measuring an impressive 96" x 96", this generously sized quilt features vibrant shades of red, pink, green, yellow, and white that radiate outward in a spectacular interlocking star design. The quilt is entirely hand pieced and finished with a traditional knife-edge binding that has been hand stitched, a hallmark of careful craftsmanship.

The artistry continues in the quilting, where beautiful hand quilting enhances rather than competes with the bold geometry of the piecing. Elegant feather and scroll motifs gracefully fill the white background, drawing the eye across the quilt and adding wonderful texture and dimension. The quilting beautifully frames the dramatic star, creating a perfect balance between bold graphic design and delicate needlework. There are a few scattered age spots and minor imperfections consistent with a well-loved antique, all documented in the accompanying photographs. This is a remarkable example of early 20th-century American quiltmaking—equally suited for display as a statement piece or treasured as part of a serious quilt collection.
