Vintage Grandmother's Flower Garden Quilt with Provenance

Few quilts capture the charm of the Depression Era quite like a Grandmother's Flower Garden, and this beautiful example is made even more special by the provenance that accompanies it. Hand pieced from a delightful assortment of colorful floral and novelty prints, the quilt features vibrant flower garden blocks set against a crisp white background with striking green pathways and a beautifully executed scalloped edge. The quilt is hand quilted throughout and finished with a hand-stitched applied green binding. A lightweight batting gives it a soft, comfortable feel while allowing the intricate handwork to remain the star of the show.

Included with the quilt is a handwritten note identifying the maker as Mae Clymer and stating that the quilt was created in 1930. The quilt also retains its Cass County Fair (Pleasant Hill, Missouri) blue ribbon and exhibition documentation. According to family history, Mae's granddaughter entered the quilt in the fair's heirloom division in 1999, where it was awarded a blue ribbon decades after its creation. While the provenance identifies the quilt as a 1930 creation, the fabrics and overall design suggest a date later in the 1930s. As with many family histories, an exact date cannot be guaranteed, but regardless of whether it was completed in 1930 or several years later, this remarkable quilt was clearly treasured enough to be preserved, exhibited, and honored for generations.
