Vintage Quilt Sunbonnet Sue on a Swing

This delightful vintage Sunbonnet Sue appliqué quilt measures approximately 65" x 74" and features 20 charming Sues, each seemingly caught in motion on her own little swing. The figures are dressed in a wonderful assortment of colorful period cottons—tiny florals, calicos, novelty prints, geometrics, and cheerful dress prints in shades of pink, lavender, aqua, yellow, red, green, and blue. Many of the fabrics are consistent with 1930s–1940s feedsack and dress-print cottons, creating a wonderful snapshot of the textiles available to home sewers during the Depression and WWII eras. Deep blue sashing surrounds each individual block and forms the outer border, beautifully framing the softer pastel prints and giving the quilt a striking graphic quality.

The workmanship is especially lovely. Each Sunbonnet Sue is appliquéd by hand, while the black swing ropes and additional details are also hand stitched, giving the figures their distinctive illustrated appearance. The quilt is hand quilted throughout and contains thin batting, allowing the dense quilting and wonderful vintage puckering to really show. The binding is formed by wrapping the fabric over the edge and finishing it by hand. This quilt is in fair vintage condition: the binding along the head end has areas of fraying as well as a hole, and there are some spots present, as shown in the listing photographs. These signs of age have been taken into consideration when assessing the quilt's condition.

  • Circa: TDating to approximately 1935–1945, this is a particularly sweet example of the beloved Sunbonnet Sue tradition. The combination of hand appliqué, hand embroidery, hand quilting, period fabrics, and that beautiful blue sashing gives it tremendous vintage character. Whether displayed on a wall, folded over an antique bench, or added to a collection of early American quilts, the 20 little Sues swinging across this quilt make it difficult not to smile.
