Vintage Quilt Sunbonnet Sue

Few quilt patterns capture the warmth of home and family quite like Sunbonnet Sue, and this charming vintage example is filled with the sweet character that has made the design a favorite for generations. Dating to approximately the 1940s, this quilt features twelve hand-appliquéd Sunbonnet Sue figures, each dressed in a delightful assortment of floral prints, plaids, and probable feedsack fabrics that reflect the resourcefulness and creativity of the era. The hand blanket stitching around each Sue gives the figures wonderful definition, while the soft mint green sashing frames each block beautifully. The quilt measures 62" x 80" and has an applied binding that is hand stitched, hand appliqué, and a combination of hand and machine quilting, adding both texture and durability. The batting is lightweight.

Janj Threads carefully washed and line dried this quilt to freshen it for its next home. There is still some yellowing on the backing at the head end, and additional soaking may lighten it further if desired. The most significant condition issue is the binding, which has fabric loss and open edges throughout and will likely need attention if intended for regular use. Aside from the binding wear, the quilt remains in good vintage condition, with all twelve Sunbonnet Sue appliqués intact and presenting beautifully. Whether displayed as a nostalgic piece of Americana, enjoyed as a vintage textile, or treasured by a collector of Sunbonnet Sue quilts, this quilt is a wonderful example of mid-century craftsmanship and the enduring appeal of feedsack-era quilting.

This quilt has been gently laundered by Janj Threads using quilt-safe methods. While every effort has been made to preserve the quilt's original character, signs of age and use may still be present. The quilt is clean, fresh, and ready to enjoy.
