Vintage Quilt Sunbonnet Sue

This cheerful oversized Sunbonnet Sue quilt is a wonderful example of mid-century American quilting. Measuring an impressive 100" x 110", it features dozens of hand-appliquéd Sunbonnet Sue figures, each dressed in a unique vintage fabric that showcases the colorful florals and prints popular during the 1950s. Every Sue is hand appliquéd with neat blanket stitching, while the entire quilt is finished with beautiful hand quilting that complements its simple checkerboard setting. The applied binding is hand stitched and shows some expected fraying from years of careful use. The lightweight batting gives the quilt a soft, comfortable drape, making it equally suited for display or everyday enjoyment.

This quilt remains in good vintage condition with no fabric loss or deterioration. It does have a small amount of pink rogue dye transfer, a small hole, and a few spots, all of which are documented in the accompanying photographs. Based on the fabric selections, construction methods, lightweight batting, and overall design, I believe this quilt dates to circa 1952–1958. The distinctive mid-century prints, hand-appliquéd figures, and oversized dimensions make this a charming and highly collectible example of one of America's most beloved quilt patterns.

  • Condition: Good some yellowing and spots
  • Circa: 1952–1958: Based on its vibrant mid-century floral fabrics, solid broadcloth appliqués, hand-appliquéd Sunbonnet Sue figures, hand quilting, lightweight cotton batting, and overall construction, this quilt was most likely made during the early to mid-1950s. The combination of traditional handwork with the cheerful post-war fabric palette is characteristic of quilts produced during this period.
