Vintage Quilt Pieced Butterfly

This charming Pieced Butterfly Quilt measures approximately 74" x 85" and is a variation of the #930 Pieced Butterfly block documented in Barbara Brackman’s Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns. The maker put her own subtle spin on the traditional pattern, shaping the butterfly bodies a bit differently than those shown in the original #930 design. Each butterfly is hand pieced from a delightful assortment of colorful scraps and set against a white background, with embroidered antennae adding personality to each one. The blocks are surrounded by beautiful vibrant blue sashing, creating a striking contrast that makes the butterflies seem to flutter across the quilt.

The fabrics are a wonderful snapshot of the Depression-era through early 1940s scrap bag, including ginghams, tiny florals, calicoes and other colorful cotton prints, with some fabrics possibly predating the quilt itself. Quilters often saved scraps from dresses, aprons, household sewing and other projects for years, making quilts like this a textile record of a family's sewing history. The quilt is beautifully hand quilted at approximately 6–7 stitches per inch (SPI), with especially lovely decorative quilting filling the generous blue areas. It has very thin to virtually no batting, giving it a lightweight feel and allowing the hand quilting to show beautifully. The quilt is finished with an applied binding that has been hand stitched. A wonderful example of a traditional pattern made distinctly personal through fabric, color and the hand of its maker.

  • Condition: Excellent with 2 small noteable spots
  • Circa: 1930s–1940s. The combination of period cotton prints, ginghams, small-scale florals, scrap construction and traditional hand workmanship supports a Depression-era to early WWII-era date, with some individual fabric scraps possibly dating somewhat earlier
  • Batting: Thin
  • Standout: Beautiful blue sashing!
  • Shipping: (within the continental U.S.) and shipping insurance is included in the price of the item.
