Vintage Quilt Nine Patch on Point

This wonderful Nine Patch on Point quilt measures approximately 69" x 80" and is a true textile history lesson. Its diagonal rows of colorful Nine Patch blocks are surrounded by generous cream-colored setting fabric, allowing each assortment of prints to stand out. The quilt contains an especially fascinating range of old fabrics, including several black-and-white and indigo prints that appear to date from approximately 1880–1910, many florals, plaids and shirtings consistent with the 1910–1930 period, and additional colorful dress prints and probable feedsack fabrics from the 1930s–1940s. The mixture suggests either that the top was pieced over time or that its maker had access to a treasured collection of fabric scraps spanning several decades.

The quilt contains thin batting and is finished with an applied binding. Its dense, allover machine quilting appears much newer than the fabrics and original piecing, suggesting that a vintage quilt top was professionally finished at a later date. Another possibility is that the top itself was assembled later from a carefully saved treasure trove of antique fabrics. Either way, the result preserves an extraordinary assortment of early textiles in a useful and beautifully finished quilt. It is in excellent condition, with no notable fabric loss or deterioration; the only issue observed is a small area of pink rogue-dye transfer. The quilt top is best placed circa 1930s–1940s, with fabrics dating from approximately 1880 through the 1940s and machine quilting added later.

This quilt has not been laundered by Janj Threads. Any cleaning decisions have been left to the next caretaker to preserve the quilt according to their preferences. Please be certain to color test this quilt before washing. Due to the age of some of the fabrics in this quilt, I highly suggest not washing this machine in a conventional washing machine and using only quilt safe washing processes.
