Vintage Quilt Lee Wards Tulip Circle

This beautiful vintage “Tulip Circle” quilt was made from a Lee Wards quilt kit offered in the company’s Spring 1968 catalog for $15.99. The design features cheerful red, golden yellow, and orange tulips with green stems and leaves arranged in a graceful circular wreath, with additional tulip motifs decorating the corners and edges. The colorful appliqué stands beautifully against the crisp white background. Each appliqué is hand stitched, with lovely detailed hand embroidery accenting the individual tulips. The extensive crosshatch quilting is machine stitched and creates a wonderful diamond texture across the otherwise open white ground. The quilt is finished with an applied, machine-stitched binding.

Overall, this quilt presents beautifully, although it does show some age-related wear. The binding appears faded and has areas of fraying and seam separation, and some of the machine quilting has popped stitches. There are three very faint yellow spots on the front and one spot on the back, all noted in the photographs. Despite these imperfections, the brilliant tulips, crisp white background, abundant quilting, and hand-worked appliqué and embroidery make this a striking example of a late-1960s kit quilt—and a wonderful survivor from Lee Wards' long tradition of offering needlework projects to home quilters.

This quilt has been laundered by Janj Threads.
