Vintage Quilt Double Wedding Ring

Few quilt patterns capture the spirit of American quilting quite like the Double Wedding Ring. Although variations of interlocking rings appeared earlier, the pattern became a national sensation after the Kansas City Star published it in 1930, quickly becoming one of the most beloved quilt designs of the Depression era. This lovely example showcases everything collectors appreciate about these quilts—graceful scalloped edges, beautifully balanced rings, and an incredible assortment of tiny scrap fabrics that tell the story of a resourceful maker. Hand pieced and hand quilted at an average of approximately 6 stitches per inch, the quilt features a delightful mix of Depression-era florals, feedsack fabrics, shirtings, plaids, checks, novelty prints, and geometric cottons in soft shades of pink, butter yellow, blue, lavender, green, and peach. The delicate quilting enhances the design without competing with the colorful rings, while the thin batting gives the quilt a soft, comfortable drape.

Measuring 70" x 82", the quilt is finished with an applied binding that has been hand stitched. The binding shows some fraying consistent with its age, and there are a few spots visible on both the front and back. As is often found in well-loved quilts of this era, a handful of the fabrics within the rings exhibit fabric loss or deterioration, reflecting the use of cherished scraps that had already lived a life before becoming part of this quilt. Despite these signs of age, the quilt remains a beautiful display of Depression-era craftsmanship and ingenuity. Whether admired for its remarkable collection of period fabrics, displayed as textile art, or appreciated as part of a vintage quilt collection, this Double Wedding Ring quilt is a timeless reminder of the beauty that can be created from even the smallest pieces of fabric.

This quilt has been gently laundered by Janj Threads using quilt-safe methods. While every effort has been made to preserve the quilt's original character, signs of age and use may still be present. The quilt is clean, fresh, and ready to enjoy.
