Vintage Quilt Foundation-Pieced String Diamond Coverlet

This colorful vintage coverlet is composed of foundation-pieced string blocks arranged to create diamonds, squares and pinwheel-like secondary designs. Narrow strips and small fabric pieces were sewn directly onto muslin foundations, allowing the maker to use even the smallest scraps. The remarkable assortment includes florals, plaids, checks, stripes, polka dots, paisleys, novelty prints and geometric designs, making the coverlet a wonderful textile scrapbook. The completed blocks were joined together and finished with an applied binding.

This piece does not have traditional batting or a separate backing. The muslin foundations and block seams remain visible on the unfinished reverse, as shown in the photographs. Although relatively thin, it is remarkably heavy due to the overlapping fabric strips, seam allowances and muslin foundations. Please review all photographs carefully for the best representation of its construction and condition.
