Vintage Quilt Dresden Plate Variation

This charming Dresden Plate Variation quilt is a wonderful celebration of Depression-era color and fabric. Measuring 52" x 86", the quilt features 15 large open-center Dresden Plates arranged against a creamy white background. Each plate is pieced from a delightful assortment of vintage cottons in florals, plaids, stripes, checks, geometrics, and small novelty-style prints. The mix includes fabrics consistent with the feedsack and dress-cotton era, creating a wonderful snapshot of the maker's scrap basket. Rather than traditional solid centers, the plates were left open, giving them the appearance of colorful wreaths. Each plate is hand appliquéd to the background with contrasting blanket stitches, beautifully outlining both the inner circle and scalloped outer edges.

The quilt has a wrapped binding that is machine stitched, and the batting is thin giving the quilt a lightweight feel. It is in excellent vintage condition and, from its appearance and finish, may never have been laundered. There are just a few small spots on the front consistent with age and storage. The fabrics retain remarkably rich color, making this an especially appealing example of a scrappy Dresden quilt.

This quilt has not been laundered by Janj Threads. Any cleaning decisions have been left to the next caretaker to preserve the quilt according to their preferences.

Circa: 1930s to early 1940s, with some fabrics possibly dating earlier. A beautiful piece for a collector and a wonderful textile record of the fabrics available to a resourceful quiltmaker nearly a century ago.
