Vintage Quilt Broken Path Variation

THIS IS A CUTTER/STACKER QUILT

This charming vintage cutter quilt features a variation of the Broken Path block (Brackman Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns #2438), a design published by the Kansas City Star on October 25, 1939. Each block showcases a delightful three-dimensional "basket" motif created with gathered fabric strips, giving the quilt wonderful texture and depth. The maker used an appealing assortment of authentic Depression-era cottons, including feedsack prints, tiny florals, ginghams, plaids, shirtings, and dress fabrics in soft shades of aqua, pink, coral, lavender, and green. Based on both the published pattern and the fabrics used, this quilt dates to circa 1940–1945, making it a lovely example of resourceful wartime-era quilting.

Offered as a cutter quilt, this piece has extensive fabric loss, holes, and wear throughout from decades of use. The applied binding is hand stitched but is damaged and missing in several areas. Quilting is sparse but entirely hand stitched, adding to its handmade charm despite its condition. While no longer suitable as a bed quilt, it remains a treasure trove of vintage textiles. Many of the intact basket blocks feature beautiful period fabrics that are ideal for upcycling into pillows, wall art, bags, ornaments, slow-stitch projects, and other one-of-a-kind creations. This quilt offers both historical significance and an abundance of authentic vintage fabric for your next creative project.

This quilt has not been laundered by Janj Threads. Any cleaning decisions have been left to the next caretaker to preserve the quilt according to their preferences.
