Vintage Quilt Appliqued Butterfly

This charming Vintage Butterfly Appliqué Quilt measures 84" x 92" and features dozens of colorful butterflies arranged in concentric rows around a small center grouping. Each butterfly is appliquéd to the white ground and outlined with bold black blanket stitching, complete with hand-stitched antennae. The wonderful assortment of small florals, geometrics, novelty prints, dots, and dress cottons creates almost a fabric sampler in quilt form, with several prints appearing consistent with vintage feedsack fabrics. Based on the fabrics and colorways, we date this quilt to approximately 1935–1945, with many of the prints especially characteristic of the late 1930s and early 1940s. The quilt is nicely hand quilted at approximately 5–6 stitches per inch (SPI), has thin batting, and is finished with an applied binding that is hand stitched.

This quilt is in good vintage condition with age-related wear. One butterfly is beginning to come loose, and there is slight fading to a few of the butterfly fabrics. Janj Threads has laundered the quilt, although some yellowing remains, particularly at the head end. Further careful soaking and sun exposure may help fade the remaining discoloration. With its wonderful variety of period fabrics, whimsical butterflies, and abundant handwork, this quilt is a beautiful example of Depression-era scrap quilting and a lovely piece of textile history.
